Kali

@OJAYOGA

Kali (Half Sri-lankan/ Australian) feels blessed to be trained in the lineage of Patanjali, the father of yoga and is well studied in the  yoga sutras. Known as Ashtanga Yoga which translates to the 'eight limb' path.

This form of traditional yoga is way beyond just a sequence of exercise or movement that we've come to recognise it in the modern/ western world.

It is an all encompassing classical yoga that is centralised around ancient philosophy/ lifestyle values and involves practical applications of asana (poses), pranayama (breath-work), pratyahara (meditation) and elements of Ayurveda ('science of life') the sister to yoga.

Kali is a Mental Health Support Worker and Senior Yoga Practitioner who leads and connects from the heart.

You will be in good hands.

To serve others to serve their higher purpose, serves her's!

ASANA (Yoga Sequence)

  • Carefully constructed movement with purpose. You will experience and be guided into euphoric hatha and vinyasa flow. When we position our body with intention we invite ourselves to align energetically creating strength, self-transformation and healing.

PRANAYAMA (Breath-work)

  • The ancient practice of breath control through our bodies own natural intelligence using specific techniques for particular benefits. When we learn to embrace the flow of our breath, we raise Prana Shakti, our life energies. Consistent conscious breathing serves to clear physical and emotional obstacles in our systems.

PRATYAHARA (Meditation)

  • This is the first stage of meditation and translates to withdrawal of the senses. In this space we can become timeless therefor ageless and formless therefor weightless. We return home to our energy selflessness, connecting to all energy matter in union. Limitless. Free.

SANKALPA (Intention)

  • We will set solid goals or soul goals in our sessions and embody them throughout each practice in our movement and breath.

YOGA NIDRA

  • Yoga nidra, also known as yogic sleep, is a guided meditation practice that induces a state of conscious deep relaxation and rejuvenation, similar to sleep but with awareness i a structured supported format. This nidra includes chakra activation and purification.

PRANA (Life Energy)

  • Prana means vital life energy found within us and within all things. We can direct the prana upwards in heated manner to energise and we can direct apana downwards in a cooling manner to cultivate inner calm.

PHILOSOPHY

  • Ancient vedic wisdom is woven seamlessly throughout each practice re-inforcing positive vibrations to ripple through your life-time. You will embody divine conciousness through Yogic science to add to your self care tool kit. We touch on (and explain) Tantra and the Yamas and Niyamas and more.

Your experienced hosts, all the way from Australia are honoured to hold this safe space for you to expand and grow in. You will connect to your mind, body and breath and each-other. This is the gift that keeps on giving...

🙏 Cultural Considerations for Your Journey to India

India is more than a destination — it's a living, breathing tapestry of devotion, colour, and ancient wisdom. As guests of this sacred land, we have the opportunity to not only receive its spiritual gifts, but also to honour its cultural traditions with open-hearted respect and curiosity.

Whether this is your first time in India or your tenth, the following notes are here to support your experience — not to restrict it. They’re shared in the spirit of sattva (clarity, respect, balance) and to help you feel prepared, grounded, and in harmony with your surroundings.

👣 Dress Modestly & Respectfully

  • Rishikesh is a sacred city where many locals, pilgrims, and spiritual seekers visit holy sites daily.

  • Please wear loose-fitting, modest clothing that covers the knees, shoulders, and chest — especially during temple visits, satsang, and while walking through town.

  • Yoga tights are best worn with a longer tunic or top when in public spaces.

  • This isn’t about shame — it’s about respecting the collective energy of the land.

🛕 Footwear Etiquette

  • It’s customary to remove your shoes before entering temples, homes, ashrams, and sometimes certain shops or cafés.

  • You may want to bring sandals that are easy to slip on and off.

  • Watch for signs — if in doubt, follow what the locals are doing.

🤝 Greetings & Personal Space

  • The traditional greeting is “Namaste” with palms together and a gentle bow of the head.

  • Physical touch (like hugs or handshakes) is not as common in formal or devotional settings unless initiated.

  • Respect for personal space, elders, and spiritual teachers is deeply valued in Indian culture.

🍛 Food & Water

  • Our retreat provides nourishing vegetarian meals, following Ayurvedic and yogic principles.

  • Out of respect for local customs (and digestion!), we ask that participants avoid bringing meat, alcohol, or intoxicants into the retreat space. Rishikesh is a sacred place that does not endorse such substances.

  • Tap water in India is not potable — Shops/ cafe's provide affordable, safe, filtered or bottled drinking water at all times.

🧎‍♀️ Sacred Sites & Devotional Practice

  • Rishikesh is a hub of spiritual pilgrimage — please move mindfully and speak gently in temples, riverbanks, and during ceremonies.

  • You may witness rituals like aarti (light offerings) on the Ganges or hear chants and bells throughout the day. Feel free to observe or join, as guided — your heartfelt presence is welcome.

  • Photography in sacred spaces should be approached with sensitivity and, when unsure, it's best to ask or refrain.

🚫 Boundaries & Safety

  • While India is incredibly hospitable, it’s also important to stay aware and grounded.

  • We recommend avoiding displays of wealth or excessive attention, and always travel in pairs or groups when out exploring.

  • Our team will provide tips for local etiquette, safety, and transportation once you're on the ground.

🌿 Come with Curiosity, Leave with Reverence

This retreat is not just about yoga or kirtan — it’s about immersing in a living spiritual culture.
We ask that you come with:

  • Openness to learn and adapt

  • Willingness to respect what is different

  • Gratitude for the opportunity to walk gently on this land

If you have any more questions about cultural etiquette, clothing, shopping, or spiritual customs, we’re here to guide you lovingly — every step of the way.

Let India touch you not just with its beauty, but with its heart. 🪔

  • 🥗 Stick to freshly cooked meals, and peel fruit yourself.

  • 💬 Learn a few words in Hindi or practice saying “Namaste” with reverence — it goes a long way.

🪷 Final Notes

You don’t need to bring everything — India has pharmacies and shops for most basics. But arriving prepared will help you relax deeply into the retreat without stress or discomfort.

If you’re unsure about anything, just ask — we’re here to help every step of the way.

“Come with openness, travel light, and leave space for magic.” 🌍🕉️
